Te tūranga | The role
Keep mechanical assets performing safely and reliably. As a Mechanical Maintenance Engineer, you'll provide specialist expertise to ensure Waikato Waters' plant and equipment - from pumps and valves to treatment systems - are maintained to a high standard and deliver consistent performance.
Reporting to the Operational Systems Lead, you'll support both planned and reactive maintenance activities, helping prevent failures, diagnose issues, and continuously improve asset reliability.
You'll work closely with operations and maintenance teams to ensure mechanical work is practical, effective, and aligned with long-term performance outcomes.
Ō mahi | What you'll do
- Provide specialist mechanical engineering advice across plant and infrastructure.
- Support maintenance planning with clear scopes, work instructions, and technical input.
- Assist in diagnosing mechanical faults and failures, working with operations teams.
- Lead root cause analysis and recommend corrective and preventative actions.
- Ensure maintenance activities meet mechanical standards and manufacturer requirements.
- Identify and escalate risks or non-conformances early.
- Analyse failure trends and condition data to improve asset reliability.
- Contribute to maintenance strategy through evidence-based recommendations.
- Support continuous improvement of mechanical practices and performance.
You're a hands-on, technically strong engineer who knows how to keep plant running and solve problems that matter. You bring a practical mindset, strong diagnostic ability, and a focus on long-term reliability.
- Mechanical engineering qualification (degree, diploma, or trade with strong engineering capability)
- Significant experience in mechanical maintenance within operational environments.
- Strong knowledge of pumps, rotating equipment, and mechanical plant systems.
- Proven ability to diagnose faults and deliver durable solutions.
- Experience working with or managing specialist contractors.
- Strong communication skills and a collaborative, solutions-focused approach.
- Experience in water, wastewater, utilities, or industrial environments (desirable)
