We’re working with a rapidly expanding global FinTech with long-standing relationships across the large NZ organisations. This position represents a rare opportunity to be the first technical hire on the ground, helping drive a major transformation of their local platform.

The organisation is now undertaking a significant uplift and modernisation effort—transitioning a legacy system into a modern cloud-native, AI-driven environment. They’re committed to taking the best components of the existing technology and making them “plug and play” within their contemporary platform.

The Opportunity:
This is a hands-on engineering role for someone who enjoys real-world problem solving, modernising legacy systems, and balancing deep technical delivery with clear communication to clients and internal stakeholders. You will:
  • Own the uplift and integration of a long-standing legacy platform into a modern cloud ecosystem
  • Build new integrations and resolve existing issues across the system
  • Work with clients, explaining technical concepts in accessible, non-technical language
  • Rebuild and enhance parts of the AI engine as the company moves toward an automation- and AI-forward model
  • Collaborate closely with a globally distributed engineering team, receiving remote support and upskilling on tools, documentation, and modern engineering standards
  • Operate autonomously as the local technical point person while influencing future engineering capability in NZ
This is a pivotal role ideal for someone who enjoys independence, modern engineering challenges, and shaping future architecture.

What You’ll Do:

Platform Ownership & Integration
  • Lead the integration of the NZ legacy system into the organisation’s modern cloud platform
  • Take responsibility for platform reliability, maintainability, and system evolution
  • Improve data flows into cloud-based environments for analytics and reporting
  • Contribute to the redesign and rebuild of AI decisioning components
Engineering & Delivery
  • Develop and maintain complex system integrations, including government and industry APIs
  • Drive automation initiatives, ideally using tools such as n8n
  • Resolve technical issues across the platform, ensuring stable and scalable performance
  • Adhere to global engineering, security, and deployment standards
Client & Stakeholder Engagement
  • Liaise with clients, translating technical concepts into practical, business-aligned outcomes
  • Gather requirements, understand operational needs, and design scalable solutions
  • Participate in discussions around onboarding, performance uplift, and system improvements
Ways of Working
  • Onsite in West Auckland 5 days per week
  • Supported remotely by a large global engineering team
  • Onsite car parking provided
  • A culture that genuinely respects work–life balance
Skills & Experience We’re Looking For Must-haves:
  • 6+ years’ software engineering experience, ideally with backend or integration-heavy systems
  • Strong programming experience with Go, Python, .NET, or Node.js
  • Solid understanding of AWS, serverless technologies, DevOps, and Terraform
  • Experience with system integrations, APIs, and event-driven design
  • Ability to speak confidently with both technical and non-technical audiences
  • Comfortable being the primary engineer locally while working with a global team
Nice to haves:
  • Experience in regulated sectors or financial services
  • Exposure to legacy-to-cloud migration projects
  • Familiarity with n8n or other automation/orchestration platforms
  • Experience with data engineering or ETL pipelines
  • Interest in AI-driven system design and platform evolution
Why This Role Stands Out
  • First engineering hire in NZ — real ownership and autonomy
  • Blend of engineering, integration, client engagement, and technical problem solving
  • Major transformation: cloud uplift, AI engine rebuild, automation, and modernisation
  • Opportunity to influence architecture and technical direction locally
  • Flexible culture
  • Onsite parking provided
